In the Piedmont of North Carolina, right around 3:00 p.m. on spring and summer afternoons, the humidity peaks and rain clouds begin to roll in. You think to yourself “I need to find cover, fast!”

In my latest piece, Barn – Hiding From the Storm, that’s exactly what I tried to portray.

Imagine yourself out exploring the countryside, taking in the sight of a vibrant yellow-green field, soaking up the summer sun, and off to the side, you see those mid-afternoon clouds approaching. But on this day, you spot the roof of a barn that is just peeking over the hill at you. Is it hunkered down for the storm? Or is it peeking at you to see if you need its’ shelter?

To me, it’s a reminder of those fleeting, yet electrical energy moments right before a summer rain—where the colors of nature seem magically amplified, and you're just looking for that one safe, bright spot to wait it out.

So what do you decide? Run back to the safety and shelter of your car and complain about getting rained on? Or make a dash to explore the shelter of the barn and to enjoy the sound of rain hitting the roof and the smell of wet earth?

Send me an email and let me know your thoughts—I always love hearing the stories you see in my brushstrokes!
