Giclée Printing and Why
Giclée is a high-quality inkjet printing process used for fine art reproductions. The process provides exceptional color accuracy and durability. The term comes from the French for "to spray," which is what a specialized printer does when it applies tiny droplets of archival pigment-based ink onto fine art paper or canvas.
For my giclée prints I use an Epson 10-color printer, using specifically the UltraChrome PRO10 ink system, which is designed to produce high-quality, long-lasting professional prints. This technology allows the printer to create prints that are resistant to fading under normal indoor lighting conditions.
The paper I use is Epson Velvet Fine Art Paper, which is 100% cotton rag, buffered and acid free, and paper is coated with an Enhanced Matte coating, giving exceptional color gamut and contrast. The velvet surface offers a unique museum quality feel.
Yes, you can order less expensive prints on the internet, or even copy a print you like and print it at home on your regular color printer. But if it is something you really like, and intend to take the time and money to frame it, it is best to ensure that the print will last as long as (or even longer than) you want.
